Screen Time Guidelines by Age
Based on the World Health Organization (WHO) and American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) guidelines, widely used by Singapore paediatricians.
| Age | Recommended Limit | What's Allowed | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 18 months | None | Video calls with family only | Brain needs real-world interaction for language development |
| 18-24 months | Minimal | High-quality educational content with a parent | Child cannot learn from screens without adult mediation |
| 2-5 years | Max 1 hour/day | Co-view with parent, age-appropriate content only | Unstructured play and social interaction are more valuable |
| 6-12 years | Consistent limits | Homework, educational, and recreational - Balanced | Sleep, exercise, and homework should not be displaced |
| 13+ years | Sensible limits | Social, creative, and educational content | Mental health impact of social media - Monitor closely |
