Baby Bonus Singapore FAQ
Answers to the most common questions about Singapore's Baby Bonus scheme, Child Development Account, MediSave Grant, childcare subsidies, and maternity leave entitlements.
How much is the Baby Bonus in Singapore?
The Baby Bonus Scheme applies to Singapore Citizen (SC) babies only. It has two components: a Cash Gift paid directly to parents, and a Child Development Account (CDA) First Step Grant plus government matching. The amounts depend on your child's birth order.
| Birth Order | Cash Gift | CDA First Step | Max CDA Matching | Total Maximum |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1st child | S$8,000 | S$3,000 | S$3,000 | S$14,000 |
| 2nd child | S$8,000 | S$3,000 | S$6,000 | S$17,000 |
| 3rd child | S$10,000 | S$3,000 | S$9,000 | S$22,000 |
| 4th child | S$10,000 | S$3,000 | S$9,000 | S$22,000 |
| 5th+ child | S$10,000 | S$3,000 | S$15,000 | S$28,000 |
Important notes on the amounts above
- • The Cash Gift is paid over 18 months in 6 instalments (not all at once)
- • The CDA matching is dollar-for-dollar up to the matching cap - you must deposit into the CDA to trigger the government match
- • CDA First Step of S$3,000 is automatic - no deposit required
- • Only Singapore Citizens qualify; Permanent Resident babies do not receive the Baby Bonus
- • Figures are current as of 2024; check the Baby Bonus portal at go.gov.sg/babybonus for latest amounts
The total amounts above assume you deposit the maximum amount to trigger full government matching. Families who do not deposit into the CDA will still receive the Cash Gift and CDA First Step, but will not receive the matching component. Use the Baby Expense Calculator to see how the Baby Bonus fits into your overall budget, and see the finance hub for a complete guide to Singapore family benefits.
Read the full guideHow do I apply for the Baby Bonus?
The Baby Bonus application process has been streamlined and is now largely automatic once you register your baby's birth. You do not need to visit a government office. Most families complete everything digitally through the LifeSG app or the Baby Bonus Online portal.
After registering your baby's birth at the hospital or at ICA, you will receive a notification (usually within 3 to 4 weeks) through the LifeSG app or via SMS to apply for the Baby Bonus. You will need to log in with your Singpass, confirm your details, and nominate a CDA-approved bank.
| Step | Action | Timeline |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Register birth | At hospital (most do this automatically) or ICA within 42 days | Within 42 days of birth |
| 2. Receive notification | LifeSG app or SMS invitation to apply for Baby Bonus | ~3-4 weeks after birth registration |
| 3. Apply online | Log in via Singpass, confirm baby details, select CDA bank | 10-15 minutes online |
| 4. Open CDA | Open Child Development Account at DBS/POSB, UOB, or OCBC | Can be done same day, online |
| 5. Receive Cash Gift | Paid in 6 instalments over 18 months | First payment ~6 weeks after approval |
CDA-approved banks in Singapore are DBS/POSB, UOB, and OCBC. Each offers slightly different features (interest rates, linked accounts) but the government matching works identically at all three. You can open the CDA account online without visiting a branch. The CDA First Step of S$3,000 is credited automatically by the government within 3 weeks of account opening - you do not need to deposit anything to receive it.
Read the full guideWhat is the Child Development Account (CDA)?
The Child Development Account (CDA) is a special savings account for Singapore Citizen children. It is one of the most powerful government schemes for families because of the dollar-for-dollar government matching on deposits you make. The government matches every dollar you deposit up to the matching cap for your child's birth order.
The CDA earns a minimum interest rate of 2% per annum, which is higher than most standard savings accounts. The CDA First Step grant of S$3,000 is automatically deposited by the government when the account opens - you do not need to do anything. The matching window is open until your child turns 12 years old.
What can you use CDA funds for?
- • Childcare and infant care at ECDA-licensed centres
- • Kindergartens including MOE Kindergartens
- • Healthcare at approved hospitals, polyclinics, and specialist clinics
- • Optical and dental at approved providers
- • Pharmacies - some Guardian, Unity, and Watsons stores are approved
- • Approved special education programmes for children with developmental needs
CDA funds that are not spent by the time your child turns 12 are automatically transferred to their Post-Secondary Education Account (PSEA), which can then be used for tertiary education fees. No money is ever lost - unused CDA funds remain with your child. When using CDA funds, you will receive a CDA card (debit card) from your chosen bank to make payments at approved merchants. For a full list of approved uses and merchants, check the finance hub.
Read the full guideWhat is the MediSave Grant for Newborns?
Every Singapore Citizen baby receives an automatic S$4,000 MediSave Grant deposited into their CPF MediSave account at birth. You do not need to apply for this - it is credited automatically when the birth is registered. This applies to all SC babies regardless of birth order.
Unlike the CDA, the MediSave Grant is for healthcare specifically. The funds in your baby's MediSave account can be used for:
- • Hospitalisation at restructured hospitals (Class B2, C subsidised wards)
- • Approved outpatient treatments
- • MediShield Life premiums (Singapore's national health insurance)
- • Outpatient scans and procedures at approved polyclinics
- • Private hospital charges above subsidised rates
- • Over-the-counter medicines
- • Most outpatient GP visits (unless with MediShield Life rider)
- • Vaccinations at private clinics
Good news: MediShield Life for babies
All SC and PR babies are automatically covered by MediShield Life from birth. MediShield Life covers large hospital bills and helps reduce out-of-pocket expenses significantly. The annual premium for children under 21 is very low (under S$100/year) and can be paid from MediSave. Consider adding an Integrated Shield Plan (IP) for more comprehensive coverage, especially if you plan to use private or Class A/B1 wards.
The MediSave Grant helps offset the high cost of healthcare for young children. It grows with interest over time and cannot be withdrawn as cash - it stays in your child's CPF account for healthcare throughout their life. This is in addition to any MediSave your child may inherit from you. See the finance hub for a complete guide to Singapore healthcare subsidies for families.
Read the full guideHow much childcare subsidy do I get in Singapore?
Singapore's childcare subsidy system has two tiers: a Basic Subsidy available to all working mothers, and an Additional Subsidy for households with monthly income below S$12,000. The subsidies apply to ECDA-licensed infant care (2-18 months) and childcare (18 months to 6 years) centres.
| Household Income (gross) | Infant Care Subsidy/mo | Childcare Subsidy/mo | SC / PR Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| All working mothers | S$600 (SC baby) | S$300 (SC baby) | Basic subsidy - SC or SC-PR couple |
| Below S$3,000 | Up to S$710 additional | Up to S$467 additional | SC baby required |
| S$3,001 - S$6,000 | S$440-710 additional | S$290-467 additional | SC baby required |
| S$6,001 - S$9,000 | S$190-440 additional | S$120-290 additional | SC baby required |
| S$9,001 - S$12,000 | Up to S$190 additional | Up to S$120 additional | SC baby required |
| Above S$12,000 | Basic subsidy only | Basic subsidy only | Basic subsidy applies |
Both parents must be working, studying, or on medical leave to qualify for the Basic Subsidy. If one parent is not working, a lower subsidy of S$150 per month for infant care or S$15 per month for childcare applies. Subsidies are applied automatically once you enrol in an ECDA-licensed centre and submit the required income documents. Apply via the Ecitizen portal or through your chosen childcare centre. Use the Baby Expense Calculator to estimate your actual out-of-pocket costs after subsidy.
Read the full guideHow does maternity leave work in Singapore?
Singapore's maternity leave entitlement depends on whether your baby is a Singapore Citizen. For SC babies, mothers receive 16 weeks of paid maternity leave. For non-SC babies, the entitlement is 8 weeks.
| Leave Type | Duration | Who Pays | Condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maternity Leave (SC baby) - first 8 weeks | 8 weeks | Employer | Employed mum, SC baby |
| Maternity Leave (SC baby) - 9th-16th week | 8 weeks | Government (via employer) | Employed mum, SC baby |
| Maternity Leave (non-SC baby) | 8 weeks | Employer (first 8 weeks) | Employed mum, non-SC baby |
| Paternity Leave (SC baby) | 2 weeks | Government (via employer) | Employed father, SC baby |
| Shared Parental Leave | Up to 4 weeks | Government (via employer) | Both parents employed; mother can share her 16 weeks |
From 2024: Extended paternity leave
As of 2024, fathers of SC babies are entitled to 4 weeks of government-paid paternity leave (up from 2 weeks), provided their employer agrees. Many companies have already implemented this. The MOM website has the latest official confirmation. Use the Parental Leave Calculator to work out your family's entitlements and pay during leave.
Maternity leave can be taken continuously from before birth, or flexibly (with employer agreement) - for example, returning part-time or delaying some leave until later. Self-employed women who have been self-employed for at least 3 months before birth also qualify for government maternity leave benefit for SC babies. See MOM's website or our finance hub for the latest official details.
Read the full guideCan I use MediSave for delivery costs?
Yes - MediSave can be used to pay for hospitalisation and delivery costs, which makes a significant difference given that delivery at a restructured hospital in Singapore can cost S$2,000 to S$8,000 or more depending on ward class and whether you have a C-section.
| Delivery Type | MediSave Withdrawal Limit | Daily Hospitalisation Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Normal (vaginal) delivery | S$2,150 total (Maternity Package) | S$450/day |
| C-section delivery | S$3,500 total (Maternity Package) | S$900/day |
| Surgical procedures during pregnancy | Up to S$7,550 for complex cases | Varies by procedure |
MediShield Life (Singapore's national health insurance) covers large inpatient bills separately from the MediSave daily withdrawal limits. MediShield Life pays for the portion above your deductible and co-insurance, significantly reducing your final bill. If you have an Integrated Shield Plan (AIA, NTUC Income, Prudential, Great Eastern), your coverage will be even more comprehensive.
For most Singapore Citizens delivering at KKH, NUH, or TMC at a Class B2 or C subsidised ward, delivery costs after MediSave and MediShield Life are often very low or nil. At Class A or private hospitals, out-of-pocket costs can be substantial even with insurance. Always get a cost estimate from your hospital before delivery. See the pregnancy guide for hospital comparisons and the finance hub for full delivery cost breakdowns.
Read the full guideHow much does infant care cost in Singapore after subsidies?
Infant care (for babies 2 to 18 months) is the most expensive form of childcare in Singapore. Before subsidies, fees range from S$1,500 to S$3,500+ per month depending on whether you choose a government anchor operator or a private centre. After subsidies for eligible families, the net cost can be dramatically reduced.
| Gross Household Income | Anchor Operator (PCF/NTUC) Monthly | Private Centre Monthly |
|---|---|---|
| S$0-3,000 | ~S$0-100 | ~S$500-900 |
| S$3,001-6,000 | ~S$100-350 | ~S$700-1,100 |
| S$6,001-9,000 | ~S$350-600 | ~S$900-1,400 |
| S$9,001-12,000 | ~S$500-800 | ~S$1,000-1,600 |
| Above S$12,000 | ~S$800-1,100 | ~S$1,200-2,000+ |
Waitlist tips for Singapore infant care
- • Start registering at centres during pregnancy or even earlier - popular centres (especially PCF Sparkletots and NTUC First Campus/My First Skool) have waiting lists of 6-12 months
- • Apply to multiple centres simultaneously - there is no penalty for being on several waitlists
- • SC children get priority at PCF Sparkletots and other government-linked Anchor Operators
- • Check the ECDA iFindCare portal for vacancies and the LifeSG app for subsidy estimates
The two main Anchor Operators in Singapore are PCF Sparkletots (run by PAP Community Foundation, the most widespread) and NTUC First Campus / My First Skool. Both are heavily subsidised and receive additional government funding to keep fees affordable. Private centres are more expensive but may offer different pedagogical approaches (Montessori, Reggio Emilia) or longer hours. Use the Baby Expense Calculator for a personalised breakdown of your childcare costs.
