How to Count Fetal Movements

1
Choose a regular time

After a meal (when baby is most active) or at a consistent daily time. Evening is often best.

2
Get comfortable

Sit or lie on your left side in a quiet place. This maximises blood flow to the uterus.

3
Count every movement

Kicks, rolls, jabs, flutters, and hiccups all count. Aim for 10 movements in 2 hours.

4
Log your results

Note the time to reach 10. Over time, you'll learn your baby's normal pattern.

Contact your doctor or midwife immediately if: you feel fewer than 10 movements in 2 hours, movements have significantly decreased from your baby's normal pattern, or you haven't felt movement for several hours. Do not wait until the next day.

Kick counting is recommended from week 28 of pregnancy. For your full pregnancy timeline, visit the Week-by-Week Guide →
