Room-by-Room Childproofing Guide for Singapore Homes

Once your baby starts moving - typically rolling at 4 months, sitting at 6, crawling at 8–9, and walking at 12 months - every room becomes a potential hazard zone. Singapore HDB flats and condos have their own specific risks (wet kitchen floors, open windows, corridor railings). Use this alongside the Baby-Proofing Checklist Generator for a complete personalised list.

Singapore-Specific Risks

Open windows and balconies
Critical

Under-12 window fall deaths occur every year in Singapore. The law requires window grilles or restrictors that prevent openings wider than 10cm if children are in the home. Check every window in your flat.

Wet kitchen floors
High

HDB kitchens often have a wet and dry zone. Crawling babies and early walkers slip easily on wet tiles. Use non-slip mats and keep the kitchen gated during cooking.

Corridor railings in condos
High

Older condominium balcony and corridor railings may have horizontal bars that act as a ladder for toddlers. Add netting or plexiglass panels if gaps are accessible.

Maid's room and storage areas
Medium

Often contain cleaning chemicals, ironing equipment, and tools. Install a childproof lock on the door. Brief your domestic helper on specific hazards.

Electrical outlets at floor level
High

Singapore uses the 3-pin UK-style outlet. Standard plastic socket covers are a choking hazard themselves if removed by toddlers. Use sliding-cover sockets or outlet boxes instead.

Water features and fish tanks
Critical

Communal pool areas, decorative ponds in condos, and even large fish tanks are drowning risks. Children can drown in as little as 5cm of water.
