🚨 Emergency: Call Your Local Emergency Number Immediately

If baby is unresponsive and not breathing normally, start CPR and call your local emergency number immediately.

1
Check responsiveness

Tap foot gently. Shout baby's name. If no response, shout for help and call your local emergency number.

2
Open airway

Tilt head back slightly (neutral position for infants - Not too far back). Lift chin gently.

3
Check for breathing

Look, listen and feel for breath for no more than 10 seconds.

4
Give rescue breaths (x2)

Cover baby's mouth AND nose with your mouth. Give 2 small, gentle puffs (1 second each). Watch chest rise.

5
Start chest compressions

Place 2 fingers on breastbone, just below nipple line. Push down 4cm (1.5 inches). Rate: 100–120/min.

6
30:2 cycle

30 compressions then 2 rescue breaths. Continue until help arrives or baby recovers.

Infant CPR: Step-by-Step Guide (Singapore BCLS Standards)

If you think a baby is unresponsive: Call 995 immediately. Start CPR only if baby is unresponsive and not breathing normally. This guide is for education only. Take a certified BCLS course at Singapore Red Cross or SRFAC for hands-on training.
1
Check for Response
Tap the baby's foot firmly and call their name. Shout for help and call 995 (or ask someone to call while you start CPR).
2
Position Baby
Place baby on a firm, flat surface on their back. Tilt the head back gently (neutral position for infants, not hyperextended).
3
Check Breathing
Look, listen and feel for no more than 10 seconds. If not breathing normally, give 2 rescue breaths.
4
Rescue Breaths
Cover baby's nose AND mouth with your mouth. Give 2 gentle puffs lasting 1 second each, enough to see the chest rise.
5
Start Chest Compressions
Place 2 fingers on the centre of the chest, just below the nipple line. Press down ~4 cm (about one-third the chest depth). Release fully. Rate: 100-120 per minute.
6
CPR Ratio
30 compressions, then 2 rescue breaths. Repeat until help arrives, baby starts breathing, or you are physically unable to continue.

Choking in Infants: 5 Back Blows + 5 Chest Thrusts

Hold face-down on forearm
Support the infant's head with your hand, face downward, slightly lower than the chest.
Give 5 firm back blows
Strike firmly between the shoulder blades with the heel of your hand. Check after each blow.
Turn face-up, give 5 chest thrusts
Place 2 fingers on the centre of the chest. Push down about 4cm, 5 times.
Check the mouth
If you can SEE the object, remove it carefully. Never do a blind finger sweep in infants.
