Folic acid
Folic acid is the synthetic form of folate, a B vitamin that plays a critical role in forming your baby's brain and spinal cord. Getting enough folic acid in the weeks before conception and through the first 12 weeks of pregnancy significantly reduces the risk of neural tube defects such as spina bifida and anencephaly. The recommended dose for most women is 400 micrograms daily, though women with a history of neural tube defects or certain medical conditions may need a higher dose of 5 mg. It is found in leafy greens, legumes, and fortified foods, but a supplement is the most reliable way to meet the target.
What This Means for You
Understanding Folic acid is an important part of your preconception/first trimester journey. During pregnancy, your care team will use this term regularly. Being familiar with it means you can ask better questions and feel more confident at your antenatal appointments.

Singapore's Ministry of Health guidelines recommend starting folic acid supplementation at least one month before you try to conceive, so begin as soon as you are planning a pregnancy rather than waiting for a positive test.
