First trimester
The first trimester covers weeks 1 through 13 of pregnancy, and it is one of the most critical periods for your baby's development. During these weeks, the fertilised egg implants in the uterus, and all major organs and body systems begin to form, including the heart, brain, spinal cord, and limbs. Many women experience morning sickness, fatigue, and breast tenderness during this time. Your first prenatal appointment will usually happen around week 8 to 10, where your doctor will confirm the pregnancy, check for a heartbeat, and order blood tests. Avoiding alcohol, raw foods, and certain medications is especially important during this window.
What This Means for You
Understanding First trimester is an important part of your weeks 1-13 journey. During pregnancy, your care team will use this term regularly. Being familiar with it means you can ask better questions and feel more confident at your antenatal appointments.
