Safe Sleep for Your Baby in Singapore

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the leading cause of death in babies aged 1 month to 1 year. The good news: most risk factors are preventable. Singapore's Ministry of Health and HPB follow the American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP) safe sleep guidelines. Our full guide at Safe Sleep for Your Newborn covers every recommendation in detail.

The ABC of Safe Sleep

A
Alone

Baby sleeps alone in their own safe sleep space - not in your bed, not on a sofa. Bed-sharing with adults significantly increases SIDS risk, especially if parents are fatigued, have consumed alcohol, or use medications.

B
Back

Always place baby on their back for every sleep - naps and night. Once baby can independently roll both ways (usually 4–6 months), you don't need to reposition them, but always start on back.

C
Crib

A firm, flat sleep surface with a fitted sheet. No soft bedding, pillows, bumpers, positioners, or loose toys. The crib, bassinet, or play yard should meet current safety standards.

Singapore-Specific Safe Sleep Considerations

Heat and humidity

Singapore's year-round heat means babies can overheat easily. Dress baby in a single layer (onesie or sleep sack appropriate for temperature). Room should be 24–26°C. Never use thick quilts, heavy blankets, or traditional "swaddling with towels."

Confinement practices

Some traditional Chinese and Malay confinement practices involve placing babies on soft mattresses, propping on pillows, or keeping them in the bed with the mother. These practices carry SIDS risk. A firm, separate sleep surface is always safer.

Air conditioning

Safe to use and recommended for heat management. Point aircon away from baby and keep room at 24–26°C. Do not let baby get cold - check neck temperature, not hands and feet.

Baby bouncers and car seats

These are not safe sleep spaces for extended sleep. If baby falls asleep in a bouncer or car seat, transfer to a firm flat surface as soon as safely possible.

Sleeping bags vs. blankets

Infant sleeping bags (wearable blankets) are safer than loose blankets in Singapore. Choose a 0.5 TOG or 1.0 TOG rating appropriate for air-conditioned rooms.
