When to Take a Pregnancy Test

Test too early and you get a false negative. Here is when hCG is detectable, which tests detect it earliest, and what a faint line means.

The Best Time to Test

The most reliable time to take a home urine pregnancy test is on the day of your missed period or later - which is typically 14 days after ovulation (14 DPO). Testing at this point gives a result you can trust.

Some women prefer to test earlier. A sensitive test (10-25 mIU/mL) may detect hCG as early as 10-12 DPO for pregnancies where implantation happened early. But testing before 10 DPO is almost always unreliable.

Why early tests fail even in successful cycles

hCG does not appear until implantation, which happens 6-12 DPO. After implantation, levels start very low (1-5 mIU/mL) and double every 48-72 hours. Most tests detect at 20-25 mIU/mL. It takes 2-3 doubling periods - about 4-6 extra days after implantation - for hCG to reach detectable levels. Testing at 7 or 8 DPO, even in a pregnancy, will almost certainly be negative.

hCG Levels by Days Past Ovulation

DPO Typical hCG Range Standard Test (25 mIU/mL) Sensitive Test (10 mIU/mL)
8 DPO1-5 mIU/mLAlmost always negativeAlmost always negative
10 DPO5-50 mIU/mLOften negativePossibly faint positive
11-12 DPO20-150 mIU/mLSometimes positiveUsually positive
14 DPO (missed period)100-400 mIU/mLReliably positiveReliably positive
16-18 DPO500-2,000 mIU/mLClear positiveClear positive

hCG ranges are approximate and vary significantly between individuals. These are typical values, not diagnostic thresholds.

What a Faint Line Means

A faint line is a positive result. Pregnancy tests detect hCG at or above a threshold - any line (however faint) that appears within the test reading window (usually 3-5 minutes) indicates detectable hCG in your urine.

However, faint lines before 12 DPO need to be interpreted cautiously for two reasons:

  • Some early positive tests represent a chemical pregnancy - an embryo that implanted but did not continue. This may resolve to a negative test by 14 DPO and a period arrives on time or a few days late. Chemical pregnancies are more common than most people realise (estimated 10-20% of all conceptions) and are not a sign of infertility.
  • Evaporation lines can appear if you read the test after the instruction window (usually after 10 minutes). Always read tests within the time specified on the packet.

What to do if you see a faint line

Wait 48 hours and test again. In a healthy ongoing pregnancy, hCG doubles every 48-72 hours - a faint line at 10 DPO should be a noticeably darker line at 12 DPO. A line that does not darken or disappears may indicate a chemical pregnancy.

For early testing (before 14 DPO), First Response Early Result is the most sensitive urine test widely available in Singapore. For regular testing, bulk OPK/pregnancy test strips from Shopee or Lazada are cost-effective for couples who test frequently.

A blood test (beta-hCG) from a GP clinic is definitive and can detect pregnancy earlier than any urine test. It also gives a quantitative result (the actual hCG number), which helps confirm a viable pregnancy by checking that levels are doubling appropriately.
