How to Get Pregnant Faster

Ranking the changes that actually move the needle - from timing sex correctly to preconception health for both partners.

Step 1: Get the Timing Right

The single biggest change most couples can make is timing sex correctly. Having sex at the wrong time of your cycle - even every single day - has zero chance of resulting in pregnancy.

Your fertile window is the 5 days before ovulation plus ovulation day itself. Sex 1-2 days before ovulation gives the highest chance per cycle. Read the Fertile Window guide to understand why these days are the only ones that matter.

The practical plan that works for most couples

  1. Calculate your estimated fertile window using the Ovulation Calculator
  2. Start OPK testing 4 days before your estimated ovulation day
  3. Check cervical mucus daily - look for egg-white texture
  4. Have sex every 1-2 days during the fertile window (no need to hold back at other times)
  5. Do not stop having sex the day you see egg-white mucus - continue for 2 days after the OPK positive

Step 2: Preconception Health for Both Partners

Fertility is not just about timing. The health of both the egg and the sperm matters significantly. Eggs take about 3 months to mature; sperm take about 74 days. Changes you make today can improve egg and sperm quality for the cycle 2-3 months from now.

Area For Women For Men
Supplements400mcg folic acid daily (or 5mg if high risk); vitamin D if deficient; iron if lowZinc 15mg, vitamin C, CoQ10, selenium; avoid antioxidant megadoses
WeightBMI 18.5-24.9 optimises ovulation; both overweight and underweight reduce fertilityOverweight reduces testosterone and sperm quality; aim for healthy BMI
SmokingStop immediately - smoking ages ovaries and reduces ovarian reserveStop - smoking damages sperm DNA and reduces count and motility
AlcoholZero or near-zero; safe in pregnancy is unknown so avoid when tryingHeavy alcohol significantly reduces sperm quality; limit to under 14 units/week
HeatNot a significant factorAvoid hot baths, saunas, tight underwear, laptop on lap - heat impairs sperm production
StressExtreme stress can suppress ovulation; moderate stress has less effect than commonly thoughtChronic stress raises cortisol which can reduce testosterone and sperm quality

What Does NOT Help (Common Myths)

Some widely shared advice on forums and social media actively reduces your chances or wastes time and money.

Myth

Lying with your legs up after sex increases your chances

No evidence. Sperm reach the cervix within seconds of ejaculation regardless of position. You do not need to lie still, elevate your hips, or do anything special afterward.

Myth

Having sex less often to "save up" sperm improves chances

The opposite is true. Sperm quality declines in samples held for more than 5 days. Ejaculating every 1-2 days produces the best quality, motile sperm.

Myth

Preseed or other supplements guarantee pregnancy

Preseed is a sperm-friendly lubricant - helpful if you need lubrication and avoids harming sperm, unlike regular lubricants. It does not boost fertility on its own.

Myth

Certain positions improve chances of conceiving a boy or girl

Sex position does not influence which sperm fertilises the egg. The Shettles method has no scientific support.

Getting Support in Singapore

If you have optimised timing and preconception health for 3-6 months without success, a preconception check with your GP is worth doing. Many fertility issues are detectable through a simple blood test and semen analysis.

Singapore public polyclinics offer preconception counselling as part of their services. A polyclinic visit costs under $20 for Singapore citizens. From there, referrals to KKH or NUH can be made for specialist assessment at subsidised rates.

For a more comprehensive fertility workup without waiting for a referral, private fertility clinics in Singapore typically charge $400-900 for a first consultation and initial investigations (AMH, hormone panel, semen analysis, and pelvic ultrasound). This gives a full picture of your starting point.
