What Are the Requirements to Enter K1 and K2 in Singapore?

Age eligibility, toilet training, health checks, and documentation you need to enrol your child in K1 or K2 at a Singapore preschool.

Age Eligibility for K1 and K2

Singapore preschools follow ECDA's age framework. The year your child turns a certain age determines which level they enter, regardless of the month of birth.

Level Age Requirement Example (for Jan 2026 intake)
Nursery 1 (N1)Turns 3 in that yearBorn in 2023
Nursery 2 (N2)Turns 4 in that yearBorn in 2022
Kindergarten 1 (K1)Turns 5 in that yearBorn in 2021
Kindergarten 2 (K2)Turns 6 in that yearBorn in 2020

A child born in December 2021 is in the same K1 cohort as a child born in January 2021. The year of birth is what matters, not the specific birth date. This can sometimes feel unfair for younger children in the cohort, but it is the universal Singapore standard.

What the Entry Process Actually Involves

ECDA guidelines explicitly state that preschools should not conduct formal academic assessments or examinations for admission. There should be no maths tests, reading tests, or IQ-style assessments at the preschool entry stage.

What Centres May Conduct

  • An informal meet-and-greet or orientation to assess readiness and comfort level
  • A developmental observation (watching the child play or interact, not a test)
  • A parent interview to understand the child's background, interests, and needs
  • Review of previous school report or teacher notes (if transferring from another centre)

For most community and AO kindergartens, entry is simply based on age eligibility and registration order (or ballot). More selective private preschools may conduct a more in-depth readiness chat, but formal academic tests remain against ECDA guidelines.

Toilet Training: A Real Requirement

Unlike academic readiness, toilet training is a genuine requirement for K1 entry at most Singapore preschools. Some N1 and N2 programmes are more flexible, but by K1 (age 5), centres almost universally expect children to be independently toilet trained.

Specifically, most centres expect:

  • The child can communicate the need to use the toilet
  • The child can pull pants up and down independently
  • The child can manage basic hygiene with minimal adult assistance
  • Daytime dryness (night-time is not required)

If your child is not yet toilet trained: Speak to the centre directly before registration. Some centres will work with families and give a short period to achieve this milestone before formal entry. Starting toilet training at least 3 to 6 months before entry is advisable.

Documentation Required for Enrolment

When enrolling your child in K1 or K2, you will typically need to provide the following documents. Requirements can vary slightly by centre.

Document Notes
Child's Birth CertificateOriginal and photocopy
Child's Immunisation Records (Health Booklet)Must show completed NCIP vaccinations
Parent's NRICBoth parents' NRICs or passport if PR/EP holders
Passport-sized photo of childUsually 2 copies
Medical condition or allergy declarationRequired for centres to prepare safe care plan
Previous school's report or transfer letterIf transferring from another preschool

For subsidised enrolment, you will also need income documents (payslips or Notice of Assessment) so the centre can process your childcare subsidy or KiFAS application.
