The chubby rolls, the round belly, the soft cheeks — baby fat is one of the most distinctive features of a healthy infant. But far from being cosmetic, this fat plays critical roles in brain development, temperature regulation, and immune function.

Why Newborns Need Brown Fat

Newborns cannot shiver efficiently to generate heat. Instead, brown fat is packed with mitochondria that 'burn' fatty acids directly to produce heat — a process called non-shivering thermogenesis. This is why skin-to-skin and warm wrapping are so important in the first hours after birth when brown fat reserves are being mobilised.

Baby Fat and the Brain

The brain is about 60% fat by dry weight. During the first two years of life, the brain grows more rapidly than at any other time. This growth requires enormous amounts of specific fats — particularly:

  • DHA (docosahexaenoic acid): the primary structural fat in brain cell membranes and myelin
  • Arachidonic acid (ARA): critical for synapse formation
  • Cholesterol: the main structural component of myelin

Myelin and Baby Fat

Myelin — the fatty sheath that insulates nerve fibres and speeds signal transmission — is 70% fat. Its production peaks in the first two years of life. The fat in breast milk and formula is specifically formulated to support this myelination process. DHA in particular is selectively taken up by the developing brain.

Why breast milk fat is unique

Breast milk fat composition changes throughout the feed (more fat in hindmilk) and throughout the day, providing different fatty acid profiles that match the baby's changing needs.

Should You Worry About a 'Fat' Baby?

Infant obesity is not assessed by BMI the way adult obesity is. Growth charts track weight-for-length. A baby on the 95th percentile for weight who is also tall is probably healthy. A chubby breastfed baby is almost never at risk — breastfed infants self-regulate intake. Concerns arise only when weight gain is dramatically disproportionate to length.
