7 to 9 Month Milestones

Crawling, pulling to stand, stranger anxiety, and the pincer grip - Baby is now actively exploring the world.

Development at 7–9 Months

🦵 Gross Motor

  • Sits independently for extended periods without support
  • Begins crawling - Any style counts: commando (belly crawl), bear crawl (hands and feet), classic (hands and knees)
  • Pulls to standing using furniture for support
  • Cruises along furniture at 9 months - Steps sideways holding on
  • Lowers self to sitting from standing - Controlled, not falling

✋ Fine Motor

  • Pincer grasp developing by 9 months: picks up small objects with thumb + index finger (not full pincer yet - Develops to 12m)
  • Raking grasp earlier (all fingers) → inferior pincer (thumb + 2 fingers) → mature pincer
  • Bangs two objects together deliberately
  • Puts objects into and out of containers
  • Pokes with index finger

💬 Language

  • Points at objects of interest - Communicative pointing is a key milestone
  • Waves bye-bye on cue
  • Imitates sounds and simple gestures (clapping)
  • Responds differently to 'no' - Beginning to understand meaning
  • Babble has rhythm and intonation that sounds like speech

🧠 Social / Cognitive

  • Object permanence: actively searches for a toy that has been hidden - Peak development at 8–9 months
  • Stranger anxiety peaks - May cry when held by unfamiliar people (completely normal)
  • Recognises and consistently responds to own name
  • Shows preferences for certain toys, people, and activities
  • Cause-and-effect understanding: press button → music plays

Crawling - All Styles Count

Crawling is not a required milestone - Some babies go directly from sitting to standing and walking. What matters is purposeful movement across the floor. The style doesn't matter; the intent does.

Classic crawl
Hands and knees - Alternating arm and leg movement. The most common style.
Commando / belly crawl
Drags along on tummy using arms. Completely normal - Builds upper body strength.
Bear crawl
Hands and feet, bottom in the air. Common in toddlers transitioning to walking.
Once crawling begins: Baby-proof immediately. HDB homes: cover electrical sockets, remove loose cables, gate stairs and balconies. In Singapore HDBs, the gap under the unit gate is often large enough for a crawling baby to fall through - Check it.

Stranger Anxiety - What It Means

Stranger anxiety peaks between 8–12 months and is a sign of healthy social development - It shows that baby has formed a strong attachment to primary caregivers and can now distinguish them from unfamiliar people. It is not regression or a problem.

What to expect

  • Crying when held by grandparents or relatives they don't see often
  • Clinging to primary caregiver in new situations
  • Wary expression with strangers - Watching carefully before warming up
  • May refuse to be passed to others even when happy a moment ago

What helps

  • Reassure relatives that this is developmental - Not rejection
  • Let baby approach strangers at their own pace - Don't force it
  • Have the unfamiliar person sit nearby and let baby come to them
  • Regular contact with extended family reduces the intensity
