How Namkaran name selection works

1. Establish the birth detailsThe exact time and place are used to prepare the Kundali and identify the Moon's Nakshatra at birth.
2. Identify Nakshatra and PadaEach of the 27 Nakshatras has four Padas. Each Pada corresponds to a traditional opening sound.
3. Choose a meaningful nameShortlist names that begin with that sound, then consider meaning, family tradition, pronunciation and legal spelling.
Important: practices and transliterations vary across regions, languages, lineages and families. Treat this as a cultural shortlist, not a replacement for your family's priest. Where a sound yields very few names, some traditions use a close sound or another Pada within the same Nakshatra after consultation.

About the tradition and sources

Namakarana is traditionally described as a naming samskara. A Vedic organisation describes the name as aligned with the birth Nakshatra and the name spoken into the child's ear; timing and ceremony details differ by community. The starting-sound chart follows the widely used 27-Nakshatra, four-Pada system.
