When your baby is born in Singapore, they are automatically enrolled in MediShield Life - the national health insurance scheme run by the Central Provident Fund (CPF) Board. This coverage starts from birth and protects your child against large medical bills for the rest of their life. Here is what it actually means for your family.
What Is MediShield Life?
MediShield Life is a basic health insurance plan that covers Singaporeans for large hospital bills and selected outpatient treatments. It is mandatory, lifelong, and cannot be cancelled even if you develop serious illnesses. Premiums are paid using Medisave, so it does not affect your monthly cash flow. All Singapore Citizen children are enrolled automatically from birth.
Does It Cover Newborns From Day One?
Yes. Newborns born in Singapore are covered by MediShield Life from their first day of life. This means that if your baby needs neonatal intensive care (NICU) or has a medical condition requiring hospitalisation at birth, MediShield Life helps pay for a portion of the bill. The coverage applies at all public hospitals and Class B2 or C wards in restructured hospitals.
What MediShield Life Covers for Children
| Coverage Area | What Is Claimable |
|---|---|
| Hospitalisation | Inpatient charges at restructured hospitals |
| Surgery | Surgical procedures with an approved claim limit |
| Chemotherapy and radiotherapy | Outpatient cancer treatment at approved centres |
| Chronic kidney disease | Dialysis treatment |
| NICU stays | Neonatal intensive care for sick newborns |
What MediShield Life Does Not Cover
MediShield Life is a basic plan. It does not cover everything, and there are claim limits and deductibles:
- Outpatient GP visits and polyclinic fees
- Dental treatment
- Private hospital stays (unless covered by an Integrated Shield Plan)
- Pre-existing conditions may have higher premiums initially
- Cosmetic procedures
- The first $3,000 to $5,000 of a hospitalisation bill (the deductible, which you pay yourself)
Adding Private Shield Plans for Better Coverage
Many Singapore families add an Integrated Shield Plan (IP) on top of MediShield Life. An IP is sold by private insurers and upgrades your coverage to include private hospitals or higher ward classes. Premiums for children are relatively low when they are young and healthy. Consider getting an IP rider while your child is still an infant, as insurers cannot refuse healthy young children coverage.
Keeping Your Newborn Protected Beyond MediShield Life
MediShield Life gives your newborn a safety net from day one. But it is a basic net. Review your family's full healthcare and insurance needs with the Insurance Cost Estimator.
