When Do Babies Typically Turn Head Down?

What Vertex Position Means
Vertex means the baby's head is pointing down into the pelvis. This is the optimal position for vaginal birth. Within vertex, the baby's exact orientation matters: occiput anterior (baby facing your back) is ideal; occiput posterior (facing your front) is the 'sunny-side up' position that can lead to a longer, more painful labour.
What Breech Means at 36 Weeks
If your baby is still breech at 36 weeks, your options include external cephalic version (ECV), planned C-section, or in some centres, a vaginal breech birth with specialist support. In Singapore, ECV is offered at KKH and NUH and has a 50% success rate.
How ECV Works
ECV is performed in hospital, usually with medication to relax the uterus. The doctor places hands on your abdomen and gently guides the baby through a series of movements to turn it. It is done with continuous fetal heart rate monitoring. If successful, labour can proceed normally.

If you're told your baby is breech before 36 weeks, try hands-and-knees positioning, forward-leaning inversions, and swimming. These gentle techniques give the baby space and encouragement to turn.
The Spinning Babies Approach
Spinning Babies is a body-balancing approach developed by midwife Gail Tully. It focuses on releasing tension in the uterine ligaments and psoas muscle to create optimal space for the baby to find the best position. Many practitioners and midwives recommend it as a safe, non-invasive first step.
