Why REM Sleep Matters So Much

In fetal life, REM sleep accounts for 80% of sleep time (vs 20% in adults). During REM, the brain generates spontaneous electrical activity that wires up neural circuits — a process called endogenous stimulation. This internal activation is how the visual cortex, auditory cortex, and motor circuits are refined before the baby is even exposed to the outside world.

Do Babies Dream in the Womb?

The brain activity during fetal REM sleep resembles the electrical patterns seen during dreaming in adults. However, whether this constitutes 'dreaming' in any subjective sense is unknown. Dreams require conscious processing of sensory memories, and it's unclear when consciousness develops in fetal life. Most neuroscientists believe true dreaming requires postnatal experience.

Circadian Rhythms Before Birth

Babies do not develop a fully functional circadian rhythm until after birth, but they are influenced by the mother's rhythm. Melatonin — which rises at night in the mother — crosses the placenta and makes the baby more active at night. Cortisol peaks in the morning and suppresses fetal activity.
