Why Does My Baby Wake Up So Early?

A 5am wake-up is exhausting. Here is why it happens, what Singapore's year-round sunrise does to it, and what actually fixes early waking (hint: keeping baby up later is not it).

Why Babies Wake So Early

Early waking - anything before 6am that your baby treats as morning - has several causes, and the fix depends on identifying the right one. Most early waking falls into one of these categories:

Singapore's Sunrise Problem

Singapore sits just 1.5 degrees north of the equator. Sunrise happens at approximately 6:50am in December (the "latest" it gets) and 6:57am in June. In practical terms, there is almost no seasonal variation - the sky starts lightening around 6am year-round.

A baby's circadian rhythm is powerfully driven by light. Even a small amount of light entering the room - from a gap in curtains, a nightlight left on, or corridor light under the door - can trigger a cortisol rise that makes re-settling nearly impossible. This is one reason babies who sleep well in winter in temperate countries will often struggle in a tropical climate.

Blackout curtains: the highest-return change you can make

If your baby is waking between 5 and 7am and the room is not completely dark, fix the darkness first before trying anything else. A properly darkened room - where you cannot see your hand in front of your face - can shift wake time by 30 to 90 minutes in many babies.

Practical Fixes for Early Waking

Move bedtime earlier (counterintuitive but effective)

An overtired baby releases excess cortisol, which disrupts sleep architecture and causes early waking. If your baby is going to bed after 8pm and waking before 6am, try moving bedtime 20-30 minutes earlier every few days until you reach 7-7:30pm. Many parents report that an earlier bedtime leads to later morning waking within a week.

Adjust the last feed

For babies still feeding at night, a feed around 10-11pm (a "dream feed" where you feed without fully waking them) can help some babies stretch through to a more reasonable morning time. For older babies who are waking from hunger early morning, ensuring adequate daytime calories is more effective than early morning feeding.

White noise all night

HDB estates start to come alive around 5:30-6am - rubbish trucks, lift sounds, newspaper delivery, neighbours' alarms. A white noise machine running throughout the night (not just at bedtime) can mask these sounds and prevent early waking triggered by noise rather than biology. Aim for 65-70dB, positioned across the room from the cot.
